What struck me most was that they intended the man to help train his young competitor; of course, that proposal wasn’t going to land well. Some companies make good decisions by thinking only about finances and forget that the ones promoting their financial well-being are human beings; if the humans stop feeling well, trust me, finances are going to be just as affected. I understand that from the company’s point of view, it was a better decision in the long run to hire a young employee for the position, because they wouldn’t have to deal with an upcoming retirement and another opening for the job further down the road. All in all, they could have come up with a different strategy to keep both of their employees happy and avoid forcing one of them to sit and train the other for their long-desired position. Most directive decisions are made in a stressful scenario where it’s very difficult to stop and think what would be best for everyone, or turn an entire department upside down and start anew to keep everyone happy. I understand sometimes you have to break a few eggs, but are we OK with receiving the same treatment when we get older?.
